Maru Alem, 20, of Ashkelon, was a Golani soldier who immigrated to Israel from Ethiopia as a child and was remembered for his huge heart, modesty and unforgettable smile. On October 7, Maru and three comrades were among the first soldiers to encounter the Hamas invasion near the Gaza border. They fought at several locations, delaying attackers headed toward Nirim. Maru was shot and killed while battling the terrorists.
