Neta Epstein, 22, of Kibbutz Kfar Aza, had recently completed his military service and was studying to become a soccer coach. He lived with his fiancée, Irene Shavit, in the kibbutz’s young-adult neighborhood. On October 7, as Hamas terrorists broke into their home and threw grenades into the safe room, Neta threw himself on a grenade to protect Irene. He was killed, while Irene survived by hiding beneath and behind his body for hours until she was rescued. His final act is remembered as one of extraordinary courage and love.
