Shai Germai, 19, of Karmiel, was the only daughter among four children and was remembered as intelligent, sensitive, caring and deeply committed to helping others. At age ten she began studying Amharic so she could strengthen her connection to her family’s Ethiopian roots and traditions, becoming one of the class’s outstanding students. Inspired by her older brother, Shai dreamed from age twelve of serving in the Border Police and fulfilled that goal in 2022. She became an outstanding combat soldier, known for optimism, initiative and quietly helping everyone around her. Her unit also remembered her for bringing people together and organizing a weekly challah-separation tradition on Friday evenings.

1st Sgt. Shai Germai, 19, of Carmiel - Severely wounded on Saturday night in an anti-terror operation in the Jenin Refugee Camp, she was was transferred along with three other wounded officers to the RAMBAM Medical Center in Haifa, where she succumbed t he wounds. She is survived by her parents and three brothers. In a funeral ceremony attended by hundreds of mourners, Shai was laid to rest on Sunday, 7 January in the military section of the Carmiel Cemetery.
